Baseball at Banner Island Ballpark on the river

Stockton Ports game_040513One of Stockton’s hidden gems is is great waterfront baseball park situated along the San Joaquin River, known as McLeod Lake along this stretch. It’s there that the Oakland As affiliate Stockton Ports (class A advanced) play.

Baseball has been in Stockton since that late 19th century, so the Ports, which has carried that moniker since the 1940s (except for two years when they were known as the Mudville Nine), carry on quite a tradition. The current ballpark opened in 2005 and seats a cozy 5,000 or so.

The Adventurers attended their first Ports game together last summer in a heat wave – game time temp was in the high 90s. Conditions were cooler tonight, but pleasant enough to watch young men on a quest to make an impression on their dream of getting to the bigs. Of course in L’s mind, the ballpark is always a good place to be…
