Getting a taste of sub Alpine terrain around Martis Lake

Waddle Ranch Preserve

The Adventurers intended to hike along Martis Creek but they missed the turnoff (somehow) and landed at the trailhead to the 1,500-acre Waddle Ranch Preserve, which, according to signage, was saved from development by the Truckee Donner Land Trust, considered a great victory.

Waddle Ranch Preserve_no sole boot_July 9What it doesn’t have at this time of year – especially after a low snowfall – is much shade or greenery. After starting off on a asphalt road that radiated heat, they decided to bushwhack some, which lead them around Martis Creek Lake. Maggie was, as always, a game little dog.

Waddle Ranch was a longtime working ranch, which is supposed to feature great wildlife viewing, largely absent on their tour of the property. All this to suggest that all in all, this day’s hike was a bit of a sludge, highlighted by the sole of D’s boot disengaging. It flopped along for a mile or so before D just ripped it off and declared this pair of boots a done deal.

Thankfully, there was the reward of an excellent dinner at Pianetta in Truckee…

Hike/moderate (due to heat)/4.62 miles
