D and the Mag check out Santa Cruz Avenue’s all new look

If it’s Sunday, it means a walk to Cafe Borrone for breakfast and then shopping at the farmers market held in downtown Menlo Park. No deviation from that today, but there was a new wrinkle on the return.

The two-lane Santa Cruz Avenue that had space to park cars from Olive St. (right across from where L grew up) to Arbor Rd. is no longer. Instead, on the south side of the street, there is a new six-foot sidewalk alongside a dedicated bike path, no place to park cars and a middle left and right turn lane.  There have been other attempts to tinker with Menlo’s main drag to provide better safety for pedestrians and cyclists, but this one looks here to stay.

Another sidewalk will go along the north side. Going up Middle Ave. still provides a quieter walk, but fun to check out houses they usually whiz by in a car on foot…
