Honoring Independence Day by judging a chili contest

L isn’t sure how chili and the 4th of July got connected. But she remembers when she’d returned to Menlo Park and was working at the Peninsula Times Tribune. One of her jobs was being a chili judge at one of Palo Alto’s cook off events.

Then there was just last year when she helped judge the chili contestants at SCRA, where D works part-time. Yep, they asked her back.

At noon, things were iffy. Only two chili preparations had showed up. But, proving patience is a virtue, just before the 1:00 cut off time, another four showed up, one at the very last minute.

Judges could prove that their taste buds were working hard by selecting the same “with meat” chili that the people’s choice chose. But of course the decked was stacked with the many friends who came out to support the girls first chili effort.

And  good afternoon was had by all…
